The CoLab conference was a joint conference between Ausglass and NSAG. The exhibition is on view 26 January - 3 March 2019 at the Sergeant Gallery's object-based gallery, upstairs at 31 Taupo Quay in the I-SITE building.
Downstream evokes childhood memories of floating in cool clear rivers, climbing upstream over hot baked rocks. Now, our rivers face serious challenges. Collaboration is a necessary tool for their survival – we have the potential to shape our choices and the impact we have on our environment.

Sabbia Gallery’s co-director Anna Grigson originally developed this series in 1996 when holding the position of curator at Sydney’s prestigious Quadrivium Gallery as a way to showcase the ground-breaking artwork being created by Australia and New Zealand’s glass artists. Over the last twenty years this exhibition has become one of this country’s most important annual surveys of contemporary studio glass.
Each year there is a different curatorial premise which allows the participating artists to experiment with their practice. In 2015 six Australian and New Zealand artists working in glass have been invited to create artwork that expresses their own personal interpretation of a specific colour. They have been given carte blanche to create new and innovative artwork that is sculptural or installation based.
The artists invited to exhibit are Galia Amsel (NZ), Christine Cathie (NZ), Matthew Curtis (AUS), Mel Douglas (AUS), Nick Mount (AUS) and Tom Rowney (AUS).
The colours are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. My colour is yellow, and I chose to represent the sun with three pieces - Morning, Midday and Sunset.

Midday, cast lead crystal, acid etched and polished.

"This latest exhibtion follows the evolution of Cathie's O-void series into new tapered forms. Her continued exploration of the movement and fluidity of the materials involved in the casting process, the soft wax and molten glass, offers much to the eye. Although with many parallels to her surrounding natural environment Cathie's works are strongly linked with process, capturing moments of moulding wax and flow lines of molten glass, frozen still in her sculptures."
